2007 Summer Institute for European Student Leaders

15 July – 18 August 2007

Programme Description

The Summer Institute for European Student Leaders is a five-week programme held in the United States that promotes leadership development and civic engagement through academic coursework, an opportunity to learn about the United States, English language training, and community service activities. Leadership will be explored in a variety of sectors including government, the private sector, and the community. The Institute will be held July 15 – August 18, 2007, at two American university campuses.

Academic Component: The Institute will offer an academic component comprised of in-classroom activities, lectures and presentations by university faculty members, professionals and community leaders. Coursework will focus on skills that are important to leadership such as public presentation, cross-cultural communication, negotiation and debate. Participants will interact with American peers and fellow participants from Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, and Spain, in organized discussions, presentations and other activities. In the academic component, participants will be introduced to important events and documents that have shaped the United States and learn about American society and values.

English Language Component: Participants (mainly from countries other than the United Kingdom) who could benefit from English language instruction or an English language “refresher” will be able to join small group or one-on-one tutorials. The tutorials will focus on speaking, writing, and/or reading English and will be held several times a week for the duration of the Institute.

Site Visits and Educational Travel: Participants will make site visits in the area to businesses, civic organizations, museums, historical sites and other places of interest to learn more about their host city and its history. Site visits will complement classroom activities and allow participants to observe different leadership structures and styles, and the roles that business and civic organizations play in the community and the economy. Travel outside of the local university area to other cities and regions will show participants the richness and diversity of American life and culture.

Community Service: The Institute will offer participants a firsthand experience with civic leadership in action through volunteer work with a community not-for-profit organization. Participants will work together with American volunteers on a project that will benefit their host community.

Participant Profile: Awards will be made to individuals from a broad range of ethnic, religious, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Institute applicants should have strong leadership potential, outstanding academic achievement, and a willingness to be involved in extracurricular activities. They must be mature, responsible, independent, thoughtful and inquisitive, and able to adapt to new and different situations. They must be able to participate fully in the five-week intensive programme and to meet all programme deadlines. Participants are expected to be tolerant and open-minded and to treat fellow participants, staff, and programme presenters with respect. They are expected to have an adequate working knowledge of English.

Award Provisions: The Institute award will cover round-trip airfare from the United Kingdom to the United States, tuition and fees at the host university, accommodation and meals, a small daily allowance, health and accident insurance and a small book/materials allowance. Participants will be housed in their host university’s dormitory/student hall of residence. A pre-departure orientation for all UK participants will be held in London, and a programme orientation will be held for all participants in Washington, DC, when they arrive in the United States.
