TRANSPORT

Getting Around in London
For those of you who have not (and those of you who have) been to London before, the first thing you're going to need to know is how to get around. This will become very apparent to you in the chaos of London's airports when jetlag, disorientation and panic sets in. Fear not. Follow the directions and suggestions below and things should go smoothly for you. The information below will help you to navigate your way to and from London's airports and for travel in London. Though more is to be seen of London by foot, bus or taxi, if you choose to get around by public transport the underground (tube) network is very FTC Londony to use and is recommended for those unsure of their bearings in London. To and From London Airports
The information below is designed to take you directly from London's airports to the tube stop nearest the College Day venue, The New Connaught Rooms, in Central London's Covent Garden. However, these routes will also be relevant to anyone wanting to get from the airports to Central London. Gatwick
For airport information dial 08700 002 468 (or 011 44 8700 002 468 from the US)

Travel Option 1 - Train
  • From the airport take the First Capital Connect train to London Bridge (£10.00 [single] or £20 [return]) A one day travel card (including tube travel) costs £16.80.
  • Switch to the underground Northern Line taking it to Kings Cross/St. Pancras, then switching to the Piccadilly Line to Holborn (£3.00 [single], or £12.40/£6.30 [before/after 09.30] for a one day all zones travelcard for unlimited travel on London Transport, or £6.20/£4.90 [before/after 09.30] for a one day zones 1 & 2 travelcard [all you would need for getting about in Central London] on London Transport. Refer to the travelcard zones map on London Transport's website to determine which option is best for your needs).
Travel Option 2 - Gatwick Express Train
  • From the airport take the Gatwick Express (much faster than option 1) to Victoria Station (£14.00 [single], £25.00 [return] www.gatwickexpress.co.uk
  • Transfer to London Underground Victoria Line services to Green Park
  • Transfer to the Piccadilly Line, which will take you to Holborn
    The above tube journey will cost £3.00 (single) or will be included in your all zones travelcard fare, depending which option you choose above.
Travel Option 3 - Hotelink Coach
There is an airport shuttle bus from Gatwick (£22) that is operated by Hotelink. Their service is a direct shuttle from the airport to various hotels in the London area. Reservations can be made online, by telephone 01293 532 244 (or 011 44 1293 532 244 from the US) or email at reservations@hotelink.co.uk. Discounts apply for online bookings


Heathrow
For airport information dial 08700 000 123 (or 011 44 8700 000 123 from the US)
For further information on Heathrow Airport visit the British Airports Authority's (BAA) website by clicking here. *PlFTC Londone note the Underground is underconstruction at Heathrow airport for the next 18 months, bus service is available from the airport to the Hatton Cross tube station.

Travel Option 1: Tube
  • From the airport take the Piccadilly Line straight to Holborn.
  • The above tube journey will cost £4.00 (single to any destination by tube from Heathrow) or purchase an all zones travelcard (£12.40/£6.30 - before/after 09.30)
Travel Option 2: Heathrow Express Train
  • Take the Heathrow Express (£14.50 single, £27.00 return via a ticket machine, 31 cheaper if bought online) from the airport to Paddington Station. www.heathrowexpress.com
  • At Paddington you can either get a cab to The New Connuaght Rooms or take the London Underground Bakerloo Line to Piccadilly Circus, then switch to the Piccadilly Line to Holborn or take the Circle Line service to Kings Cross and switch to the Piccadilly Line to Holborn.

Accommodation
There is no shortage of accommodation in London! Depending upon your needs, preferences and budget, you will be able to find plenty of options to meet your criteria. The FTC Londoniest way to research your options is by consulting the internet as most hotels have websites and online booking facilities. In addition to standard international hotel chains, there are plenty of small, privately owned hotels and many comfortable bed and breakfasts to choose from. When searching for accommodation, remember that the College Day venue is located in the WC2 postcode area (West Central London), which is closest to Holborn underground (“tube”) stations on the Piccadilly line.

By Road

From the North: After crossing the Forth Road Bridge, follow signs to M8 and Glasgow. Take slip road marked Edinburgh and City Bypass (A720). Follow Bypass southbound sign. Exit at Dreghorn Junction (Colinton exit). Follow signs for Redford Barracks: Merchiston is opposite these, on the north side of Colinton Road.

From the South: A1, A7 and A68 all lead to the City Bypass. Follow signs for the Forth Road Bridge and Airport. Leave Bypass at Dreghorn Junction (Colinton exit). Follow signs for Redford Barracks: Merchiston is opposite these, on the north side of Colinton Road.

From the West: From the M8, do not follow route to Forth Road Bridge, but continue on to the City Bypass, following southbound signs. Exit at Dreghorn Junction, (Colinton exit). Follow signs for Redford Barracks: Merchiston is opposite these, on the north side of Colinton Road.
